Twenty-two Texas cities, neighborhoods, non-profit organizations, and schools have been awarded grant funding totaling $15.4 million through the Texas A&M Forest Service Community Forestry Grants Program. This funding will support tree planting, maintenance, community forestry planning, and educational initiatives to enhance urban forestry solutions. The program aims to enhance the health of urban and community forests in the state, crucial for the well-being of all Texans in economic, environmental, physical, and mental aspects. These grants aim to lead local initiatives addressing community challenges through nature-based solutions statewide.
In 2024, the Community Forestry Grants Program allocated grants across various categories to organizations and departments. Recipients included the City of Socorro, which received funding under the Tree Planting initiative for the Socorro Tree Planting Project. The Socorro Tree Planting Project will result in the planting of native trees and native landscaping along the Passmore Shared Use Path in order to provide shade to walkers and bikers, encourage active living, and educate the community about environmental stewardship. Stay tuned for these improvements in the near future.
