SY!C program Interview With Lourdes

What does art do for you? Or what does it mean to you? Is it a passion, an outlet of expression, etc?

Art has always been my passion. I have been drawing since around the age of seven. Watching my uncle drawing and painting inspired me to follow in his footsteps. He had art books of the great masters that I can still remember admiring, such as Michelangelo’s Sistine chapel.

What exactly is the SY!C program and what does it consists of for participants?

Socorro Youth in Culture is an afterschool art program that can provide an outlet for students who are interested in creating art. It is geared towards students who do not participate in extracurricular activities. SY!C provides art challenges, and recorded art instruction videos. We also have summer camps for different age groups.

What is your personal goal for contributing to this program?

My personal goal is to provide instruction and guide students in creating art.  Many of the participants are my students, or have been my students at Socorro High School, so it makes it even more personal.

Why do you think it’s significant to give access to the arts to the Socorro Youth?

I think that giving the Socorro youth access to the arts improves their social skills, provides intellectual challenges, problem-solving and may keep them away from negative social behavior. I think we need to provide opportunities for the Socorro youth to expose them to the arts. They do not have much access to galleries and museums in their community.

What are your future hopes for the program?

My hope is that the program continues to grow and provide opportunities for the Socorro youth and beyond. I hope to see a city gallery or museum in the future, where local art can be promoted and encouraged.

If a parent was considering enrolling their child in this program, what would you tell them to convince them to enroll? What kind of benefits will their child experience through the course of this program?

This program can improve creativity and may help promote a healthy lifestyle.  Being involved in our afterschool art program can improve their social skills and interaction with other students with the same interests.

When you walk away from this program, what feelings do you have or hope to have?

I hope that when I walk away from this program, I can feel that I have been able to help students gain a sense of self-pride and accomplishment. The arts are a great outlet in dealing with a variety of emotions. Students need this kind of outlet, especially during these times that we have experienced.
